Natural Hazard Research

Hey 6th graders!

I know you will be able to find a lot of research about each of these natural hazards but if you need a few places to start....

6th grade teacher blog  This is a 6th grade Social Studies teacher's blog. On the left side is a heading for Natural Hazards. Click on there. From there you should be able to click on the different hazard links.  :)

A weather blog from a meteorologist  :  This site has a list of some natural hazards listed on the very bottom. Scroll WAY down :)  Not all are listed, but there are a few.

FEMA site  : This site has kid information sheets on many of the natural hazards.

National Geographic site  This site lists many natural hazards.

These are just a few to start with. Not all hazards will be explained on these sites, but for some groups it is a place to start. Have fun! Learn a lot!

Search responsibly :)

Positives and Negatives of Physical Features

Hello 6th Graders! :)

Job this morning:
Research each of the physical features we studied and find advantages (the good things) and disadvantages (the bad things) about living by/in/on these physical features. Make a bulleted list of things that you find. You should have some listed under each category, but there might not be the same number under each category. (For example, I might have 5 under advantages and only 1 under disadvantages.)

**Example: The mountains are absolutely beautiful to live by (advantage) but difficult to build in (disadvantage).

How to record your answers:
Record your answers on lined paper. I would make a T-chart.  Draw a line down the middle and split your paper into advantages and disadvantages. I put an example on the board :).

What will you use your research for?
You will be making a travel guide starting on Thursday to explain what physical feature people should live nearby, sharing the advantages and disadvantages of each.

You should try to research:
Glaciers
Deserts
Mountains
Volcanoes
Rivers
Grasslands
If time, you can do oceans

Links for some possible resources: (You may use your own)

Glaciers Positives

Glacier Negatives

Desert Positives and Negatives

Mountain disadvantages/advantages

Volcano Positives and Negatives

Positives and Negatives of living by a river

Advantages and Disadvantages of Grasslands  and More on Grasslands

Have fun!
